International Criminal Court (ICC)
By Chris Williams
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has strongly condemned the recent sanctions imposed by US President Donald Trump, asserting its commitment to delivering justice globally. In a statement released on Friday, the ICC declared, “The Court stands firmly by its personnel and pledges to continue providing justice and hope to millions of innocent victims of atrocities across the world.”
President Trump signed an executive order imposing sanctions on ICC officials, particularly targeting those involved in investigations concerning the United States and its ally, Israel. The sanctions include asset freezes and travel bans against ICC personnel and their families.
The executive order criticizes the ICC for “illegitimate and baseless” investigations, specifically highlighting the court’s recent arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. These warrants allege war crimes committed during the Gaza conflict.
In response, the ICC emphasized its independence and impartiality, urging its 125 member states, civil society, and all nations to stand united for justice and fundamental human rights.
The European Commission has also expressed support for the ICC’s mission, underscoring Europe’s commitment to justice and international law.
Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, have condemned the US sanctions, describing them as a betrayal of the international justice system. Amnesty International’s Secretary General, Agnès Callamard, stated, “This reckless action sends the message that Israel is above the law and the universal principles of international justice.”
The ICC, established by the Rome Statute, serves as a permanent international court to prosecute individuals for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide. The United States and Israel are not parties to the Rome Statute and do not recognize the court’s jurisdiction.
Despite the sanctions, the ICC remains resolute in its mission to uphold justice and accountability for victims of serious international crimes. The court continues to call for global support in maintaining its mandate against impunity.
