Inmates Achieve Record 96.2% Pass Rate in 2024 Matric Exams

Department of Correctional Services (DCS)

The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has announced a remarkable 96.2% pass rate for inmates who sat for the 2024 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations. This achievement was highlighted during an awards ceremony at the Johannesburg Correctional Centre, where Correctional Services Minister Pieter Groenewald commended the inmates for their dedication and hard work.

Outstanding Performance Across Correctional Facilities

A total of 171 inmates from 17 correctional facility schools nationwide participated in the 2024 matric exams. Out of these, 165 candidates successfully passed, with 104 obtaining bachelor’s passes. Notably, 13 of the 17 schools achieved a 100% pass rate, underscoring the effectiveness of educational programmes within correctional facilities.

Minister Groenewald praised both the inmates and their educators, stating, “Matriculants, know you have contributed to the building of the nation. You are contributing to a better nation.” He further emphasised the transformative power of education, encouraging inmates to use their achievements as a foundation for a brighter future upon reintegration into society.

Year-on-Year Improvement

The 2024 results reflect a 3% increase from the previous year’s pass rate of 93.2%, demonstrating continuous progress in the DCS’s educational initiatives. In 2023, nine correctional facility schools achieved a 100% pass rate, with 100 inmates obtaining bachelor’s passes. The consistent improvement highlights the department’s commitment to rehabilitation through education.

Educational Programmes as Tools for Rehabilitation

The DCS’s focus on education aims to equip inmates with skills and qualifications that facilitate successful reintegration into society. By providing access to formal education, the department seeks to reduce recidivism and promote social cohesion. Minister Groenewald acknowledged the role of educators in this process, stating, “You took up the pen to write an exam [and] you were successful. You must also remember that by now you still have to take a pen to make a success of your life when you leave our facilities.”

Family Support and Reintegration

Addressing the families and parents of offenders present at the ceremony, Minister Groenewald highlighted the importance of their support in the rehabilitation process. He noted the challenges of incarceration and emphasised that education serves as a key to unlocking future opportunities, urging inmates to use their qualifications to build a better nation.

Ongoing Investigations into Matric Results Leak

In a separate incident, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) arrested a 21-year-old man in Hillcrest, north of Johannesburg, for allegedly leaking and selling the 2024 matric results online prior to their official release. The suspect was reportedly selling the results to learners for R100 through a website named Edumarks. During the raid, authorities also discovered an unlicensed shotgun with live ammunition at the suspect’s residence. The Department of Basic Education (DBE) had earlier identified a potential breach in their information systems and enlisted the assistance of the Hawks and State Security Agency to investigate the matter. Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube expressed concern over the exploitation of learners and assured the public that the integrity of the matric results remains intact.
