Sizwe Dhlomo
In the wake of Bafana Bafana’s resounding victory over Morocco in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), radio personality Sizwe Dhlomo has made headlines by suggesting that President Cyril Ramaphosa may leverage the national team’s success for political gain.
On Wednesday morning, Dhlomo expressed the opinion that a win at AFCON could be used by President Ramaphosa as a strategy leading up to the 2024 National General Elections.
The remarks followed a motivational video message from President Ramaphosa, where he extended his best wishes to Bafana Bafana before their crucial match in San Pedro, Cote d’Ivoire on Tuesday. The team did not disappoint, securing a 2-0 victory and earning a spot in the AFCON quarterfinals.
The outstanding performance displayed by Bafana Bafana has become a source of national pride. Striker Evidence Makgopa and midfielder Teboho Mokoena found the net in the second half, ensuring South Africa’s advancement where they will face Cape Verde on Saturday. This is a significant accomplishment considering Bafana Bafana’s current FIFA world ranking of 66th, compared to Morocco’s 13th.
The post-match climate has not been devoid of controversy, however, as Dhlomo’s comments sparked a flurry of social media reactions.
X Popular user Chris Excel tweeted, “We still not voting ANC even if we win the World Cup. We don’t care.” This sentiment echoed the skepticism some hold regarding the apparent interweaving of political narrative and national sports triumph.
Conversely, another user rebuffed Dhlomo’s assertion, accusing him of seeking attention. “Nobody is campaigning for your vote,” they claimed, suggesting that Dhlomo’s statement was sour grapes from an EFF supporter masquerading as broadcasting critique.
A more accusatory tone was adopted by another user who insinuated that under Ramaphosa’s presidency, sporting outcomes were being manipulated for political capital, hinting at clandestine financial exchanges supposedly in favor of South African sports achievements.
Offering a different perspective, a user highlighted the multiple roles of President Ramaphosa not only as a political leader but also as the figurehead supporting the national team with logistical and financial provisions.
Among the varied responses, one Twitter user adopted a humorous take: “Under the 6th administration, Bafana won AFCON, Springboks won the World Cup, Proteas reached the semifinals, Siyaqhuba. Asinavalo!”
