IEC
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is set to host a crucial media briefing on Tuesday at Election House in Centurion to discuss the state of readiness for the highly anticipated 2024 National and Provincial Elections.
With the nation’s eyes set on what promises to be a pivotal electoral event, the briefing aims to shed light on the comprehensive preparations underway, including specific arrangements for South African citizens voting abroad.
Scheduled for Friday, 17 May, and Saturday, 18 May 2024, the out-of-country voting process is a key focus for the IEC. It is set to take place across 111 foreign missions worldwide, empowering more than 78,000 South African citizens residing overseas to participate in this democratic exercise. This initiative underscores the commission’s commitment to inclusivity, ensuring that every South African, regardless of geographic location, can have their voice heard.
However, voters looking to cast their ballots outside their registered districts are reminded of the looming deadline. Applications for such arrangements must be submitted by 5 pm on Friday, 17 May 2024, highlighting the importance of timely action to facilitate seamless participation in the electoral process.
Adding a layer of complexity to the pre-election landscape, the IEC has acknowledged a recent Constitutional Court ruling that has drawn significant attention. Three political parties – the Labour Party, the African Congress for Transformation Party, and the African Alliance for Social Democrats Party – had challenged their exclusion from the national and provincial ballots. They called for an urgent reopening of the candidate nomination and submission process, or alternatively, a postponement of the elections as scheduled.
However, the Constitutional Court’s decision on Friday was clear: the three parties will not appear on the ballot paper for the 2024 elections. This ruling not only impacts the parties involved but also paves the way for the IEC to proceed with its final preparations without further legal obstacles.
Despite the hurdles and the heightened scrutiny facing the electoral process, the IEC remains resolute in its commitment to delivering a free, fair, and credible elections. “The ruling by the Constitutional Court allows the Electoral Commission to continue with final preparations for the general elections on Wednesday, 29 May 2024,” stated the commission.
