The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is set to host a media briefing unveiling their plans for the upcoming second national voter registration weekend, slated for the 3rd and 4th of February 2024.

This weekend is especially significant as it marks one of the final opportunities South Africans will have to register to vote or update their details before the voters’ roll is sealed in preparation for the 2024 General Elections.

This critical initiative by the IEC seeks to enfranchise South African citizens who were unable to participate in the initial registration event that occurred in November 2023. Additionally, it provides a platform for current voters to amend any pertinent details on the electoral roll.

Amidst preparations for the detailed briefing, the IEC last week facilitated voter registration for South African expatriates at 120 of the nation’s diplomatic missions worldwide. This effort unfolded over three days, between January 26 and 28. Further extending its reach, the commission also organized a tailored registration window between January 30 and February 1 for those incarcerated in the country’s correctional facilities.

A recent IEC statement clarified, “Inmates due to be relocated can provide their IDs for registration, which will be forwarded to the penal institutions where they’re serving their sentences.” The body overseeing correctional services has assured the public that the safety and security of these IDs will be rigorously maintained during the process.

Amidst these targeted registration efforts, the IEC reaffirmed that their online registration platform would remain operable up until the official announcement date of the elections, broadening access for potential voters.

Remarkably, for the forthcoming registration weekend, over 23,000 polling stations will be opening their doors from 08:00 to 17:00 on both days, enabling citizens to either enlist as new voters or review and amend their existing registration details. This follows a noble turnout in November 2023, which significantly boosted the voters’ roll to an impressive 26.8 million registered voters, a figure the IEC is optimistic to increase upon.

Eligibility for registration requires citizens to be 16 years of age or older and in possession of one of the following: a green barcoded ID book, a smart card ID, or a valid temporary ID certificate. It should be noted that registration is possible for those aged 16 and above, but only those aged 18 and above will be eligible to cast a vote in elections.

As part of the procedure, registrants will need to provide their residential address—or an adequate description thereof—to ensure accurate placement within the voters’ roll. The IEC has emphasized that physical proof of residence is not a prerequisite for registration.

For further assistance, the IEC has made available a helpline (0800 11 8000) to field any inquiries from the public regarding the registration process, including details related to polling station locations.
