The Electoral Commission (IEC) has unveiled the final candidate lists ahead of South Africa’s forthcoming National and Provincial Elections, t. This comprehensive roster, inclusive of political parties and independent candidates, is poised to feature across the various ballots earmarked for the impending electoral event.
Announced on Wednesday and readily accessible via the IEC’s website, alongside availability at all commission offices, the unveiling marks a crucial phase in the election’s preparatory timeline. In an unprecedented development for the 2024 National and Provincial Elections (NPE), the listings now accommodate independent candidates aspiring for seats within the National Assembly and provincial legislatures. This landmark inclusion comes in the wake of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s endorsement of legislation in April 2023, facilitating the participation of independent entities in the democratic process.
Under this new legislative environment, a total of six independents will vie for positions in the National Assembly, with an equivalent number targeting the provincial legislatures. This historic adjustment is seen as a significant stride towards diversifying representation and reinforcing the democratic framework within the country.
Mirroring the gravity of the electoral journey, the adherence to the Electoral Code of Conduct has been emphatic since its activation on 23 February, following the election date’s official proclamation. Symbolising commitment to ethical electoral practices, a noteworthy ceremony was conducted on 4 April. This event saw the congregation of national contenders, who collectively vowed to uphold the Electoral Code of Conduct. The pledge extended to ensuring their members and supporters conduct themselves in alignment with the prescribed ethical standards. Similar pledge-signing ceremonies are scheduled to be replicated across the provinces in the imminent future, reinforcing the nationwide commitment to a fair and orderly electoral process.
With the General Election set for 29 May, South Africa edges closer to its seventh democratic election since the end of apartheid. This upcoming election is not just a testament to the country’s entrenched democratic values but also highlights a progressive shift towards inclusivity and representation through the historic inclusion of independent candidates.
