IEC Launches 2024 National and Provincial Elections Programme

# The Electoral Commission of South Africa

The Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has recently announced the formal launch of the 2024 National and Provincial Elections (NPE 2024) programme. This declaration signifies the Commission’s readiness to host millions of eligible voters at over 23,296 voting stations across the country next year.

What makes the NPE 2024 historic is the fact that, for the first time, independent candidates will be able to contest for seats in the national and provincial elections. This opportunity was made possible through legislation that was signed into law in April by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

During the launch event held at Gallagher Estate in Midrand, the Commission’s chairperson, Mosotho Moepya, and Chief Electoral Officer, Sy Mamabolo, presided over the proceedings and were joined by various stakeholders, including political parties.

In his remarks, Mamabolo expressed the Commission’s pride in being the pre-eminent Constitutionally-mandated body responsible for managing elections. He affirmed the Commission’s preparedness for the upcoming NPE 2024.

Mamabolo explained that while the current term of office for the national and provincial governments ends around 18 May 2023, these governments will remain in office until the newly elected public representatives can assume their roles. According to the Constitution, an election must take place within 90 days after the expiry of the legislatures’ terms.

Therefore, the election for NPE 2024 is expected to happen between May and the middle of August 2024. The date for the election will be proclaimed by President Cyril Ramaphosa, after consultation with the Electoral Commission. It is anticipated that the provincial elections will once again be synchronized with the national election, as has been customary for the past 30 years.

With the signing of the Electoral Amendment Act into law, the Commission wasted no time in finalizing the supporting business applications necessary for its implementation.

Before each election, the Electoral Commission launches registration drives to enroll new voters and empower existing ones to review and amend their registration details. In their commitment to ensuring access to the vote, the Commission plans to open nearly all voting stations for the weekend of November 18th and 19th, 2023.

To modernize the registration process, the Commission has expanded registration modalities. Voters can now register, inspect, and update their information online at www.elections.org.za if they have internet access. For those without internet access, local Commission offices and various activation campaigns provide alternative registration options.

The theme for the NPE 2024 will be “Your Democracy, Own It,” celebrating the fruits of democracy by showcasing the real-life experiences of young South Africans from all corners of the country.

The Commission encourages South Africans to actively participate in the registration weekends and use the online portal for registration, verification, and updates. They also extend a call to all electoral stakeholders to collaborate and ensure the success of these historic elections.

Moepya expressed the Electoral Commission’s pride and sense of responsibility in approaching the upcoming elections. He acknowledged the remarkable achievements of South Africa’s electoral democracy since the historic elections in 1994, where millions of South Africans voted for the very first time. While recognizing these achievements, he emphasizes the need to embrace the challenges that lie ahead.

As South Africa prepares for the 2024 National and Provincial Elections, the launch of the NPE 2024 programme solidifies the Electoral Commission’s commitment to conducting free, fair, and transparent elections. With the inclusion of independent candidates, this electoral process will showcase the continued growth and evolution of South Africa’s democracy.
