IEC Chairperson Mosotho Moepya Said the Commission Has Received 579 Objections
Midrand – In a media briefing held at the National Results Operations Centre (ROC) in Midrand late on Saturday evening, Mr Mosotho Moepya, Chairperson of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), unveiled critical updates regarding the 2024 National and Provincial Elections. He reiterated the commission’s commitment to transparency and expedient processing of election results, while notifying the media and the public about the 579 objections lodged.
South Africans are anxiously waiting for the commission to finalise its work and announce the election outcomes. Addressing the concerns, Moepya revealed that the commission is meticulously handling the 579 objections and anticipated that this number might surge.
“Back and Forth” on the Leaderboard
As deliberations continue, Moepya explained that the leaderboard at the ROC will “go back and forth” to accommodate the objections. He clarified, “As we consider objections before us, there will be those that require or will implicate the reopening of edit windows for results to be corrected. An edit window is a facility that allows the commission to effect corrections where there are discrepancies.”
Currently, ten edit windows have been authorised, designated for rectifying alignment between slips and captured results. Moepya confirmed that these edit windows have already been addressed.
Nature of the Objections
The objections span a wide array of concerns, primarily including:
- Incomplete result processes during the filing of objections with the IEC.
- Third-party reports indicating discrepancies between individuals’ votes and the recorded outcome for specific parties.
- Sworn allegations from complainants asserting their votes were not reflected at particular stations, prompting investigations by the IEC.
- Queries regarding seat allocations and their considerations.
- Issues raised concerning the conduct of party members, agents, and supporters during special votes and on Voting Day itself.
Moepya assured, “We will work through everything before us carefully and thoroughly.”
A Commitment to Fairness and Precision
Reassuring citizens, Moepya emphasised the commission’s dedication to impartiality by stating that it will act without fear or favour. “We have a long night ahead of us as we seek to bring finality to these matters.”
Despite the complexity of the task, Moepya expressed confidence in the IEC’s readiness to declare the final results by Sunday. According to the Constitution, the IEC is mandated to announce the outcome of the election as soon as possible. “We have to abide by that provision, among others,” affirmed Moepya.
