As Bafana Bafana gear up for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, coach Hugo Broos is confident in his team’s ability to maintain the momentum they have built over the past months. The South African national football team is set to begin their campaign this Friday, 6 September 2024, with a home match against Uganda at Orlando Stadium, followed by an away game against South Sudan on 10 September.

Broos has emphasized the importance of starting the qualification campaign on a positive note, stating that a strong start would help put pressure on their opponents and set the tone for the rest of the qualifiers. Reflecting on the team’s recent performances, Broos expressed satisfaction with Bafana Bafana’s achievements, including their bronze medal finish at the previous AFCON tournament and commendable results in friendly matches and World Cup qualifiers.

The Belgian coach has named a final squad that blends experience with youth, though he faces the challenge of missing key players, such as captain and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, who is recovering from an injury. In Williams’ absence, the competition for the starting goalkeeper position will be between Ricardo Goss, Veli Mothwa, and Sipho Chaine. Broos is expected to announce who will don the captain’s armband in the upcoming matches.

The South African Football Association (SAFA) has urged fans to show their support for the national team, with tickets for the Uganda match available at various outlets, including Spar, SASOL, and TicketPro. Gates at Orlando Stadium will open at 15:00, and ticket prices range from R30 for children to R140 for a family package.

The top two teams from Group K, which includes Uganda, Congo, and South Sudan, will qualify for the 2025 AFCON, scheduled to be held in Morocco from 21 December 2025 to 18 January 2026. With Broos at the helm, Bafana Bafana aim to secure their spot early in the qualification rounds, leveraging the confidence built from their recent successes.
