Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos says he is satisfied with the outcome of the 2025 CAF Africa Cup of Nations draw after the groups were unveiled in Morocco on Monday night.
The South African national team, Bafana Bafana, has been drawn into Group B for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), set to take place in Morocco from 21 December 2025 to 18 January 2026. Their group-stage opponents include Egypt, Angola, and Zimbabwe.
Reflecting on the draw, head coach Hugo Broos expressed a measured optimism. He acknowledged the challenges ahead but emphasized the team’s potential to advance beyond the group stages. Broos stated, “So, in general, I think we can be satisfied. It is not a very easy group. On the other hand, I think we have a great opportunity to qualify for the next round of the AFCON. And then, as you know, in the AFCON, after the group stages, anything is possible. So, we will do everything to do better than the last AFCON.”
Assessing Group B Opponents
Broos identified Egypt as the primary threat in Group B. He noted the Pharaohs’ resurgence after a disappointing performance in the previous AFCON. “When I look at our opponents for AFCON, I think that Egypt is the favourite to win the group. They didn’t do very well at the last AFCON, they didn’t perform like everybody expected and they were very soon out of the tournament. But I think in the last year and a half, they have built a very good team. They did very well in the qualifiers, so they will be the team to beat for first place,” Broos commented.
Regarding Zimbabwe, Broos highlighted the frequency of recent encounters between the two nations. “Then we have Zimbabwe again. This is the fourth time that we have played against Zimbabwe. We played against Zimbabwe in the qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. We played against Zimbabwe for the qualification of the last AFCON, but they were suspended, so there was no game between them and us. We are playing against Zimbabwe in the qualifiers for the next World Cup. We have them again now in the next AFCON. Zimbabwe is a neighbour of South Africa, and it’s always a very difficult game for us. On the other hand, in all the games we played already against Zimbabwe, we played one draw, and we won three times. So, winning against Zimbabwe is very possible in the AFCON,” he explained.
On Angola, Broos admitted limited familiarity but stressed the importance of thorough preparation. “And then we have Angola. Angola is, for me, a team I don’t know really very well. So, it will be very important to do a good analysis of our opponent Angola and to be well prepared to play that game,” he added.
Historical Context and Recent Performances
Bafana Bafana’s recent AFCON journey saw them secure a bronze medal in the 2023 tournament held in Côte d’Ivoire. This achievement marked a significant milestone, reflecting the team’s growth and potential on the continental stage.
In the lead-up to the 2025 AFCON, South Africa demonstrated commendable form during the qualification phase. They finished Group K undefeated, topping the standings and showcasing a resilient and cohesive unit. This performance has bolstered confidence among supporters and analysts alike, with many viewing Bafana Bafana as a formidable contender in the upcoming tournament.
Egypt: The Group’s Powerhouse
Egypt, with a record seven AFCON titles, stands as the most decorated team in the tournament’s history. Despite an unexpected early exit in the previous edition, the Pharaohs have undergone a period of rejuvenation. Under the guidance of their coaching staff, they have rebuilt a squad that blends experienced campaigners with emerging talents.
Their successful qualification campaign is a testament to this resurgence. The team’s tactical discipline, combined with individual brilliance, makes them a formidable opponent. For Bafana Bafana, the clash against Egypt will be a litmus test, offering insights into their readiness to compete against Africa’s elite.
Zimbabwe: Familiar Foes
The Warriors of Zimbabwe have become familiar adversaries for South Africa in recent years. The proximity of the two nations adds a layer of rivalry to their encounters. Historically, Bafana Bafana has maintained an upper hand, securing three wins and a draw in their last four meetings.
However, Zimbabwe’s unpredictable nature means that complacency could be costly. Their squad comprises a mix of domestic league players and international-based professionals, capable of delivering surprising performances. Broos’s emphasis on the difficulty of these fixtures underscores the need for meticulous preparation and focus.
Angola: The Unknown Quantity
Angola presents a unique challenge due to the limited recent interactions between the two teams. The Palancas Negras have a history of producing technically gifted players and have previously made notable AFCON appearances.
The lack of familiarity necessitates comprehensive scouting and analysis. Understanding Angola’s tactical approach, key players, and recent form will be crucial for Bafana Bafana to devise an effective game plan. Broos’s acknowledgment of this underscores the importance of not underestimating any opponent in the tournament.
Broos’s Strategic Vision
Since his appointment, Hugo Broos has instilled a sense of discipline and tactical acumen within the Bafana Bafana squad. His emphasis on youth development, combined with integrating experienced players, has created a balanced team dynamic.
Broos’s analytical approach is evident in his assessments of group opponents. By recognizing Egypt’s strengths, acknowledging Zimbabwe’s familiarity, and admitting the need for deeper insight into Angola, he demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of the challenges ahead.
