Hugo Broos announces squad for Bafana Bafana’s Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers

The Bafana Bafana Head Coach announced his 31-man preliminary squad for Bafana Bafana’s Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers squad on Thursday morning at the SAFA headquarters. 

The squad has a good blend of young players and a few experienced players with an average age of 25 years – with the oldest player aged 30 (Goalkeeper Veli Mothwa & defender Siyanda Xulu) and the youngest aged 21 (forwards Bongokuhle Hlongwane & Evidence Makgopa.) 

23 of the 31-man preliminary squad ply their trade in the domestic DSTV Premiership with Mamelodi Sundowns providing the most players in the preliminary squad,with seven players. The squad is complemented by 8 overseas-based players which include English Premier League player Percy Tau as well as Portuguese-based duo Thibang Pete and Sphephelo Sithole,both of OS Beleneses FC,who receive their first national call-ups.

In addition,the squad sees 8 of David Notoane’s Olympic squad make the step up into the senior national team set-up. 

Hugo Broos’ men will face neighbours Zimbabwe in Harare on the 3rd of September 2021 followed by a fixture against Ghana at FNB Stadium three days later.
