The Department of Home Affairs immigration official, Leballo Ellias Maqalila has been sentenced to five years direct imprisonment by the Bloemfontein Magistrates’ Court, after he pleaded guilty to charges of corruption.
This comes after he was arrested during an entrapment operation and charged.
Free State Hawks provincial spokesperson W/O Fikiswa Matoti indicated that his co-accused, Dolly Goitsemang Sediti was also arrested at a later stage.
Sediti is expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrates’ Court on 26 to 29 February 2024 for trial.
“During May 2022, the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation in Bloemfontein received information that an immigration official had demanded an amount of R8000.00 from a foreign national whose brother was arrested whilst applying for asylum at the Department of Home Affairs.
“Maqalika and his co-accused, Dolly Goitsemang Sediti (40) demanded the money for not detaining the arrested foreign national,” said Matoti.
