The Department of Home Affairs has expressed its approval following the court’s decision to deport the 95 Libyan nationals who were recently arrested at a suspected military training camp in White River, Mpumalanga. Home Affairs Minister, Dr Leon Schreiber, has instructed the department to expedite the deportation process while ensuring all legal protocols are followed. This development comes after the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) withdrew all criminal charges against the individuals, leaving their deportation as the next step.

The arrests, which took place in late July, followed a raid by South African authorities on a farm in White River. The farm, allegedly serving as an illegal military training camp, was found to contain licensed firearms, military equipment, and illegal substances such as cocaine and cannabis. Despite the presence of these materials, the NPA dropped the charges due to insufficient evidence, focusing instead on violations of South Africa’s immigration laws.

Minister Schreiber emphasized the department’s commitment to upholding the country’s immigration laws, stating that the deportation would proceed without delay. “We will not hesitate to act decisively to ensure that anyone who breaches the immigration laws of the country is processed through the courts and accordingly faces the consequences. Respect for the rule of law is sacrosanct,” he asserted.

The 95 Libyans had initially claimed to be in South Africa for educational purposes, but evidence suggested that they were undergoing military training, leading to their arrest. Home Affairs officials have been working to finalize the logistics for their deportation, with the deportation order now confirmed by the Magistrate.
