Home Affairs Minister, Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi, has lauded the incarceration of a departmental official found guilty of engaging in corrupt practices. Amos Ngwenyama faced the full force of the law at the Giyani Commercial Court in Limpopo on Friday, receiving sentences of eight and six years for two counts of fraud and corruption, respectively. These sentences are to be served concurrently, symbolising the state’s unwavering stance against graft.

Ngwenyama’s illicit activities were conducted from his station at the Malamulele office, where, under the guise of his official duties, he exchanged birth certificates for cash with non-deserving foreign nationals. This betrayal of public trust was unearthed through the collaborative efforts of the Home Affairs Counter Corruption Unit and the Hawks in Limpopo, culminating in his arrest and subsequent trial in 2023.

Minister Motsoaledi, in his response to the sentencing, did not mince his words, asserting that those involved in undermining the department’s integrity through fraudulent means would face severe consequences. “Mr Ngwenyama was arrested following a joint investigation by the Home Affairs Counter Corruption Unit and the Hawks in Limpopo in 2023 for issuing birth certificates to undeserving foreign nationals in exchange for money.”

Reaffirming his stern warning to corrupt officials within the department, Motsoaledi underscored the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards corruption and malfeasance. The public’s expectation of high ethical, moral, and honest service from government officials is a mantle the department endeavours to carry with honour, aiming to restore and maintain the trust vested in them by the citizens of the nation. “We have no tolerance for any acts of corruption and malfeasance. Public members expect government officials to uphold the highest ethical and moral standards. They are also expected to be honest in serving the public and the state,” voiced Motsoaledi, articulating a clear and no-nonsense approach to governance and public service integrity.
