“This financial year, we will be procuring 15 additional mobile units to complement the 110 that are already deployed across the country to provide services where clients have no access to our offices,” said Home Affairs Deputy Minister, Njabulo Nzuza, adding that the mobile units are a flagship intervention aimed at expanding the department’s footprint.

Home Affairs Deputy Minister Njabulo Nzuza is set to visit the Mangaung Home Affairs office in the Free State on Friday, accompanied by the Speaker of the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality, Bongani Lawrence Mathae. The purpose of the visit is to monitor the state of readiness for the upcoming voter registration weekend.

In preparation for the 2024 National and Provincial Elections, the Department of Home Affairs is extending its operating hours for the voter registration weekend of 18 and 19 November 2023. The department aims to provide ID services and related support to eligible voters during this period.

The operating hours will align with those of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), starting from 08:00 to 17:00 over the two days. The main service offered will be ID collection and application. Temporary Identification Certificates will also be issued on the spot to those who have lost or misplaced their IDs. It is important to note that eligible voters require IDs to both register and vote.

To alleviate pressure on clients and streamline queues, Home Affairs has introduced dedicated counters for collections in larger offices that process Smart ID Cards and passports, where space permits. Additionally, clients can now book collection appointments before visiting offices using the Branch Appointment Booking System (BABS), which is accessible on the department’s official website.

However, Home Affairs also allows clients who may not have an opportunity to book appointments to visit as “walk-ins.” These clients will be assisted in collecting their IDs and passports, or applying for Temporary Identification Certificates.

In a statement, the Department of Home Affairs highlighted the importance of eligible voters visiting their local Home Affairs offices to collect their IDs during the Registration Weekend of 18-19 November 2023.
