The South African Department of Home Affairs has successfully completed the deportation of 95 Libyan nationals who were apprehended in Mpumalanga last month. The operation, which concluded today at Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport, marks the swift culmination of efforts initiated following a court ruling that cleared the way for their removal.

These individuals were arrested at a suspected illegal military training facility in White River on July 26. Initially facing charges related to immigration violations, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) ultimately decided to withdraw these charges. This legal shift paved the way for the deportation process, which Home Affairs Minister, Dr. Leon Schreiber, described as necessary to uphold the rule of law.

The deportation was facilitated by the Department of Home Affairs in close collaboration with various law enforcement agencies. The flight carrying the Libyan nationals was arranged by the Libyan government, ensuring their return home without further delay.

Minister Schreiber praised the department’s officials and law enforcement officers for their diligent work in expediting the deportation. “I commend the Home Affairs officials and other law enforcement officers who worked tirelessly to ensure an expeditious deportation. We will continue to deploy all resources at our disposal to ensure the country’s immigration laws are respected and observed,” he stated.
