Holocaust Survivor, Rabbi Among 15 Killed in Bondi Beach Mass Shooting, Massacre Raises Fears of Antisemitic Violence

Sydney – A peaceful Hanukkah gathering on Australia’s iconic Bondi Beach turned into a nightmare on 14 December 2025, when two gunmen opened fire, killing 15 people and injuring over 40 others in what authorities have called a terrorist attack driven by antisemitism. Among the victims were a beloved rabbi leading the ceremony and an 87-year-old Holocaust survivor who had escaped past horrors only to face tragedy in his adopted home. This heartbreaking event has shaken communities worldwide, sparking urgent talks about gun laws, rising hatred against Jews, and the need for stronger protections during religious events.

The shooting happened at a small park near the beach, where about 1,000 people had come together for the first night of Hanukkah, organised by the local Chabad group. Families, friends, and visitors were lighting candles and sharing joy when the attackers struck, turning a moment of light into one of darkness. As details emerge about the lives lost and the brave acts that saved others, Australia is mourning while facing tough questions about safety and prejudice in a country known for its strict gun rules.

This tragedy has also stirred global concern, with leaders calling for unity against hate. In South Africa, where many have ties to Australia through family or travel, the news hits close to home, reminding us of our own struggles with violence and the importance of standing together.

The Attack: What Happened on That Fateful Day

The incident unfolded around 6:47 pm local time on Sunday, 14 December 2025, as the crowd gathered for prayers and songs. Two men, armed with guns, started shooting into the group, causing chaos as people ran for cover. The attack lasted about 10 minutes, but in that short time, it claimed 15 lives and left dozens hurt, including two police officers who were shot while responding.

Police quickly stepped in, killing the older gunman on the spot and taking the younger one into custody after he was wounded. They also found two homemade bombs at the scene, which were made safe before they could cause more harm. The quick actions of officers and a brave bystander helped limit the damage, but the loss was already too great.

One hero, Ahmed al-Ahmed, a 43-year-old fruit shop owner, tackled one of the shooters and took away his weapon, even though he got shot in the arm and hand. He needed surgery but is doing well, and leaders have praised him for saving lives. His story shows how ordinary people can make a big difference in scary moments.

Who Were the Victims? Stories of Lives Cut Short

The people killed came from all walks of life, aged from 10 to 87, including locals and visitors from abroad. They were there to celebrate faith and family, but became victims of hate. Here are some of their stories:

Rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41: A British-born leader at Chabad Bondi, he had lived in Sydney for 18 years. He was on stage leading the event when shot. Father to five kids, including a newborn, he helped prisoners and the elderly with food and support. His family called him a light in the world.
Alexander Kleytman, 87: A Holocaust survivor from Ukraine who moved to Australia for a better life. He was with his wife, kids, and grandkids when killed while protecting his wife. He had shared tales of surviving tough times in Siberia during World War II.
Matilda Britvan, 10: A happy schoolgirl who loved learning. She was playing with her sister when hit. Her aunt shared the sad news online, calling her a joy to all.
Dan Elkayam, 27: A French tech worker in Sydney, he played football and travelled widely. He died shielding a child. France’s president mourned him.
Peter Meagher: A retired cop and rugby helper, known for his big heart. He was taking photos when killed.
Rabbi Yaakov Levitan: Worked for a Jewish group in Sydney.
Tibor Weitzen: Died protecting his wife.
Reuven Morrison: Part of the Jewish community.
These were everyday folks – kids, leaders, survivors – caught in hatred’s crossfire.

The Suspects: Father-Son Duo and Possible Motives

The attackers were a 50-year-old father and his 24-year-old son, both Australian citizens. The father, who legally owned six guns, was shot dead by police. The son is in hospital and faces charges. The older man came to Australia in 1998 on visas and joined a gun club. The son was checked by security in 2019 but cleared.
No clear reason given yet, but it’s seen as antisemitic terror. Israeli officials suspect Iran, linking to other attacks. Australia has seen more hate against Jews since the Gaza war, with over 1,600 cases in a year.
Mix-ups online led to threats against an innocent man with a similar name.

Official Responses and Calls for Change
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese promised tougher gun laws, like limiting how many guns one person can have and who gets licences. He called a meeting to fight antisemitism and urged people to light candles for hope.

Local leaders praised heroes and set up memorials. The Pope condemned the violence, and leaders from France, UK, and Israel shared sorrow.

Community groups noted rising hate, calling for action.

Community Grief and Global Solidarity

Vigils drew crowds, with flowers at the beach and lights at landmarks. Families fundraise for support, and people share stories of kindness. Iranians online showed support for Jews, countering hate.

Online, some spread false info or blame, but many call for unity.
This attack reminds us hate has no place, and together, we can heal.
