Herman Mashaba Says EFF Is a Better Coalition Partner for ActionSA Than the DA

ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba has once again stirred up the political landscape, expressing his preference for the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) as a coalition partner over the Democratic Alliance (DA), specifically calling out Tshwane Mayor Cilliers Brink for his “arrogant” leadership. This comes amid growing tensions between ActionSA and the DA, particularly in Tshwane, where Mashaba’s party has been vocal about its dissatisfaction with the DA’s governance style.

Mashaba’s relationship with the DA has deteriorated significantly, with him citing a lack of trust and respect as key reasons for ActionSA’s decision to explore alternative coalition options. Speaking at a recent press conference, Mashaba openly criticized Brink’s leadership in Tshwane, labelling him as arrogant and unwilling to listen to the concerns raised by ActionSA. “The DA is history in my life because I have found it difficult to trust them any longer. I am not prepared to wait for them to kill me first,” Mashaba stated emphatically. He added that ActionSA had been forced to consider new coalition partners as the DA continuously disregarded his party’s input on critical issues like procurement tenders.

Mashaba praised the EFF for their approach to governance, particularly in Johannesburg, where the two parties worked together to remove Al Jama-ah’s Kabelo Gwamanda as the executive mayor. He highlighted that, unlike the DA, the EFF has not opposed ActionSA’s efforts to fight corruption, particularly when Mashaba sought to fire corrupt officials. This cooperative relationship stands in stark contrast to Mashaba’s grievances with the DA, whom he accuses of not taking corruption seriously enough .

The relationship between ActionSA and the DA began to sour following disputes over the Hammanskraal water treatment plant tender in 2022. Mashaba revealed that ActionSA’s legal team had found the R26 billion tender to be illegal, but the DA had allegedly tried to push it through the council anyway. This episode marked the beginning of the end for their coalition partnership, with Mashaba accusing the DA of working behind ActionSA’s back and collaborating with the ANC and EFF on other issues.

In Tshwane, where the DA has been the leading party in a multiparty coalition since 2016, the tension between the DA and ActionSA has reached a boiling point. With talks of a motion of no confidence against Mayor Brink on the horizon, Mashaba has made it clear that his party is done working with the DA and will seek new partnerships, likely with the ANC and EFF. “We are officially doing a review of removing Brink, and we are not apologising to anyone about it,” Mashaba stated .

While Brink has attempted to salvage the coalition, calling for dialogue with ActionSA and urging the party to prioritize stability in the city, Mashaba remains resolute. He believes that the DA’s leadership in Tshwane has been characterized by arrogance and a refusal to engage in meaningful cooperation, further solidifying his stance that the EFF is a more suitable partner for ActionSA moving forward.
