Health Minister, Dr Joe Phaahla, is set to take the lead in commemorating World Mental Health Day in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal, on Tuesday. The event aims to raise awareness, improve knowledge, and promote actions that protect and enhance mental health as a fundamental human right.

Joining Minister Phaahla will be KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Health, Nomagugu Simelane, World Health Organisation’s Country Director, Dr Owen Kaluwa, representatives from human rights bodies, and local leaders. Together, they will address the importance of mental health in society and highlight the need for improved access to quality mental health services.

The theme for this year’s campaign is “Mental Health is a Universal Human Right.” This theme serves as a call to action for countries worldwide to prioritize mental health services, respect the rights and well-being of individuals with mental disorders, and ensure equal access to care for all.

The Department of Health has urged communities and organizations to create an open and supportive environment for discussing mental health challenges. By breaking down barriers and encouraging dialogue, individuals are more likely to seek early diagnosis and receive effective management for their mental health concerns.

The department emphasizes that addressing stigma and discrimination is crucial, as they often exacerbate mental health problems and prevent individuals from seeking the help they need to recover.
