The South African Department of Health has issued a call for continued public vigilance after confirming a new laboratory-confirmed case of mpox in Cape Town, bringing the total number of reported cases in the country to 25 since the outbreak in May. The 38-year-old man sought medical attention last week after displaying typical mpox symptoms, including lesions on the face, trunk, thorax, and genitals, along with headache, muscle pain, and sore throat. Fortunately, the patient is currently in stable condition and is self-isolating at home.
This latest case follows the recent trend of mpox infections reported across various provinces. Gauteng has recorded the most significant number of cases, with 12, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 11 cases. The Western Cape, where this new case emerged, now has two recorded cases. Authorities are urging the public to remain alert and comply with contact tracing measures to help curb the spread of this preventable and treatable disease.
A Low Risk of Wider Transmission
The Department of Health reassures the public that while the risk of widespread transmission remains low, mpox can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, or sexual orientation. Common symptoms of the virus include a rash lasting two to four weeks, fever, headache, muscle aches, and swollen lymph nodes. The department explained that the rash often appears as painful blisters or sores, particularly on the face, hands, feet, groin, and genital areas.
Health authorities have also reiterated the importance of contact tracing, as well as transparency in reporting any suspected cases. The Western Cape’s outbreak response team has been activated, and contact tracing efforts are underway to prevent further transmission .
Ongoing Efforts to Combat Mpox
The resurgence of mpox has prompted intensified public health measures. The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) is actively monitoring the situation. The Department of Health has also emphasized the role of public cooperation in identifying and diagnosing potential cases early. Healthcare workers continue to screen individuals identified as contacts of confirmed cases .
To support these efforts, South Africa recently received another batch of Tecovirimat, a treatment for mpox, from the World Health Organization. This additional stock is part of ongoing efforts to ensure that all those affected receive prompt and effective care .
As part of the national strategy, risk communication campaigns and community engagement activities are being intensified to raise awareness and reduce the stigma often associated with mpox. Health officials have expressed concerns that fear and stigma may discourage individuals from seeking timely medical attention, which could exacerbate the outbreak .
Public Vigilance is Key
In light of the ongoing cases, health authorities are urging anyone who develops mpox-like symptoms to visit their nearest healthcare provider for evaluation, rather than attempting self-diagnosis or isolation. The department has reiterated that mpox is a preventable and manageable disease, provided that individuals cooperate with public health directives and seek timely intervention .
As South Africa continues to monitor the situation, the public is encouraged to remain informed and vigilant. Public health measures such as contact tracing and isolation are crucial to containing the spread and protecting the wider population from this re-emerging virus.
