Health Department

The Department of Health is joining the global community in commemorating World Environmental Health Day (WEHD) 2024, a pivotal event aimed at raising awareness of environmental health issues and promoting initiatives to improve and protect the environment for the benefit of all living creatures, including humans.

This year marks the 13th annual WEHD, with South Africa’s celebrations taking place at the Wild Coast Sun International in Port Edward, Eastern Cape, from 25 to 26 September. The theme for 2024, aligned with global environmental health objectives, focuses on creating resilient communities through disaster risk reduction and climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Climate Change, Disaster Risks, and Sustainable Development

According to the Department of Health, environmental health plays a critical role in mitigating and adapting to climate change and managing disaster risks. These issues have profound effects on human health, living conditions, and the overall fight against poverty. The department stressed that climate change and disasters are some of the most significant threats to sustainable development, and the failure to address them could reverse decades of progress.

The negative impacts of environmental degradation—such as pollution, loss of biodiversity, and increased natural disasters—highlight the urgent need for action. This year’s commemoration serves to reinforce the call for integrating climate and disaster risks into national and local development planning .

Building Resilient Communities

The 2024 WEHD focuses on fostering resilience in communities by enhancing their ability to withstand and recover from environmental shocks and stresses. South Africa’s environmental health practitioners are tasked with implementing strategies that prioritize disaster preparedness, improved sanitation, clean water access, and pollution control measures. These are essential to ensure that communities are not only able to survive but thrive in the face of environmental and health-related challenges.

The Department of Health has highlighted that addressing these risks requires a multi-sectoral approach, involving collaboration between government, the private sector, and civil society. In this regard, political leaders, environmental health experts, and community stakeholders are participating in this year’s WEHD event to discuss strategies and share knowledge on building a safer, healthier, and more sustainable environment.

Addressing the Climate-Health Nexus

The connection between climate change and health is well established. Rising temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, and more frequent extreme weather events are all contributing to a range of health challenges, including heat stress, respiratory diseases, and the spread of vector-borne diseases like malaria. WEHD 2024 underscores the need for health systems to adapt and respond to these emerging threats by strengthening health infrastructure, improving early warning systems, and fostering community-level resilience.

Additionally, the department stressed that environmental health initiatives, including waste management, air quality monitoring, and the reduction of industrial pollution, are key to safeguarding public health. By integrating environmental health into broader health strategies, South Africa aims to enhance its overall response to the adverse effects of climate change .

The Role of Environmental Health Experts

At the core of WEHD 2024 are environmental health professionals who play a crucial role in mitigating the effects of climate change and disasters on human health. Their work includes the prevention of disease outbreaks, the promotion of safe housing and work environments, and the development of strategies to minimize the impact of environmental hazards. The department emphasized the importance of capacity building within the environmental health sector to ensure these professionals are equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to tackle complex environmental health challenges .

The Importance of Community Involvement

In line with this year’s theme, the Department of Health is encouraging greater community participation in environmental health initiatives. Local communities are at the forefront of experiencing the effects of climate change and environmental degradation, and their involvement in disaster risk reduction and climate action is essential. By empowering communities to take ownership of their environmental health, the department believes that more sustainable and impactful outcomes can be achieved.

Political Leadership and International Collaboration

The involvement of high-level political principals in this year’s commemoration reflects the government’s commitment to prioritizing environmental health on the national agenda. The Department of Health has called for stronger partnerships between government departments, civil society organizations, and the international community to tackle the global challenges of climate change and environmental health. The commemoration also serves as an opportunity for South Africa to showcase its efforts and progress in line with international frameworks such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) .
