Hawks Arrest Three Suspects in Connection with Human Trafficking Ring in Johannesburg

Hawks Arrest

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, known as the Hawks, has arrested three suspects believed to be linked to a human trafficking ring following the rescue of 26 Ethiopian men from a house in Sandringham, Johannesburg. The operation highlights the growing crisis of human trafficking in South Africa and the relentless efforts by law enforcement to combat it.

The Gauteng Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Unit led the operation after receiving a tip-off from vigilant neighbours about suspicious activities at the property.

Escape from Captivity

Preliminary investigations revealed that the victims, all suspected to be Ethiopian nationals, were held against their will under harrowing conditions. Authorities reported that the men managed to escape by breaking a window and a burglar bar.

The scene was described as distressing, with 11 of the victims found naked and some severely injured. They were rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention, while the remaining 15 were interviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.

Suspects and Seized Evidence

The Hawks arrested three suspects during the operation and recovered a firearm at the scene.

“The suspects were found with a 9mm P Tokarev pistol, one magazine, and no ammunition,” said Hawks spokesperson Philani Nkwalase.

The arrested individuals are believed to be part of an organised crime syndicate involved in human trafficking. They are expected to appear in court soon to face charges related to human trafficking, illegal possession of a firearm, and potentially other offences as the investigation unfolds.
