Drug Mule

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) arrested an alleged drug mule and her two accomplices at OR Tambo International Airport on Tuesday, 27 August 2024. The arrests come as part of the Hawks’ ongoing efforts to combat the trafficking of illegal narcotics into South Africa.

According to Hawks spokesperson Captain Lloyd Ramovha, the 33-year-old suspect had recently departed South Africa for Brazil, purportedly under the pretense of shopping for her “upcoming wedding.” However, upon her return to OR Tambo, the Germiston-based Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team, in collaboration with customs officials and a canine unit, intercepted her. A thorough search of her luggage revealed a consignment of 10kg of cocaine, concealed within her belongings.

A Well-Planned Operation

The Hawks team, acting on intelligence gathered, was on high alert as the suspect arrived at OR Tambo. The meticulous operation saw the team not only apprehending the suspect but also conducting a broader sweep of the area to identify any potential accomplices. During this sweep, two suspects were observed at the International Arrivals hall, exhibiting suspicious behavior.

“These two individuals, both Nigerian nationals aged 37 and 52, were closely monitored by the Hawks team before being approached for questioning,” stated Captain Ramovha. Initially, the suspects claimed they were waiting for another traveler. However, upon further investigation, it was confirmed that they were indeed awaiting the arrival of the arrested drug mule, who hails from Motherwell in Port Elizabeth.

Cocaine Trafficking: A Persistent Challenge

The apprehension of the drug mule and her accomplices highlights the persistent challenge of drug trafficking in South Africa, particularly through major entry points like OR Tambo International Airport. The 10kg of cocaine seized in this operation is estimated to have a significant street value, adding to the severity of the crime.

Cocaine trafficking remains a major concern for law enforcement agencies across the globe. South Africa, due to its strategic location and robust transport networks, often finds itself targeted by international drug syndicates seeking to smuggle narcotics into and through the country. The Hawks, however, have been relentless in their pursuit of such criminal activities, continually adapting their strategies to outsmart traffickers.

The trio, consisting of the drug mule and her two alleged accomplices, is scheduled to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 29 August 2024. They will face charges related to drug trafficking and possession, with the possibility of further charges being added as the investigation continues.
