Hawks Arrest 21-Year-Old for Allegedly Selling Matric Results Online

Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks)

In a significant development, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) has apprehended a 21-year-old man for allegedly selling 2024 matric results online. The suspect reportedly operated a website offering students early access to their National Senior Certificate (NSC) results for a fee of R100.

Arrest Details

The arrest took place on Thursday at a residence in Hillcrest, north of Johannesburg. During the operation, authorities seized various electronic devices and an unlicensed shotgun with live ammunition. The suspect is currently detained for unlawful possession of a firearm, while investigations into the alleged sale of matric results continue.

Department of Basic Education’s Response

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) initiated the investigation after reports surfaced about the premature release of matric results. Minister Siviwe Gwarube expressed serious concern over the incident, stating, “We have become aware of a platform selling authentic matric results to learners and we have enlisted the services of the Hawks and the State Security to investigate the matter.”

Edumarks Under Scrutiny

The Johannesburg-based company, Edumarks, is at the center of the controversy. The platform allegedly provided students with their full results, including subject breakdowns and percentages, ahead of the official release, charging R99.90 for the service. Following public outcry and media attention, the Edumarks website has been deactivated.

The Hawks, in collaboration with the State Security Agency, are conducting a thorough investigation to determine the extent of the breach and any potential collusion. Minister Gwarube emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity of the examination system and assured the public that decisive action will be taken against those responsible. She stated, “If we’ve been victim of a cybercrime, then we will deal with it through state security and the Hawks.”

Public Reaction and Concerns

The alleged leak has raised significant concerns among students, parents, and educators. Social activist Yusuf Abramjee highlighted the issue on social media, questioning the integrity of the examination process and calling for accountability. Education activist Hendrick Makaneta described the situation as “deeply troubling” and urged the DBE to clarify its position regarding the sale of matric results by private entities.

Official Release of Matric Results

Despite the allegations, the DBE proceeded with its planned schedule for releasing the matric results. Minister Gwarube announced the official results on Monday, with individual results becoming available to students on Tuesday. Approximately 833,000 candidates sat for the 2024 National Senior Certificate examinations.
