Harrismith – South African Police Service (SAPS) Provincial Spokesperson Brigadier Motantsi Makhele confirmed that they have successfully arrested 10 suspects on the N5 and Intabazweto alleged robbery of diesel on Tuesday.
“It is alleged that on 27 July 2021, members at a roadblock received information about a group of armed suspects who allegedly robbed a truck’s diesel on the N5 near Kestell,” Brigadier Makhele said.
According Brigadier Makhele, the identified vehicle was spotted on the N5 and approached.
“Parkroad, Selosesha and Phuthaditjhaba Tactical Response Team, Welkom and Bethlehem K9 Units and Anti-Gang unit responded to the outlook for a black Audi sedan that was implicated in the commission of crime,” Brigadier Makhele said.
Two suspects were found with the identified vehicle, with diesel containers and hose pipe used to drain diesel. After being questioned by police officials, the two led the police officials to Intabazwe Informal settlement near the N3, where additional four suspects were arrested.
During the operation police officials searched the place and found a white Toyota bakkie also implicated in the transportation of diesel.
According to Brigadier Makhele, they found three tower batteries, three solar panels, three truck wheels and four full 25 litres diesel containers and a generator.
“..all discovered equipment was confiscated.”
Their arrests also led police officials to other four suspects in the area of Kestell which brought the total number of arrested suspects to 10.
“Some of the arrested suspects could possibly be linked to two alleged serious crimes which took place over the weekend in Harrismith.”
The 10 arrested suspects are expected to appear before Harrismith Magistrate Court on charges of possession of suspected stolen property and armed robbery.
