Life Sentences
The South African Police Service management is celebrating a victory as Hans Appie, a notorious rapist, was sentenced to life in prison by the Taung Regional Court. Appie was found guilty on ten charges, including rape, attempted murder, and robbery. His crimes had terrorized the town of Pampierstad between 2013 and 2014, targeting vulnerable victims such as children on their way to school and women commuting to work.
The arrest of Appie in 2013 was a major milestone for law enforcement in their pursuit of justice. The investigating officer, Sergeant Sidwell Dastile, vehemently opposed bail, ensuring Appie remained in custody throughout the trial. The case was then transferred to the Taung regional court where the verdict was delivered on November 2nd, 2023.
The extent of Appie’s crimes and the suffering he inflicted on his victims were revealed during the trial. He not only sexually assaulted the victims but also robbed them of their belongings, including money, clothes, and cellphones. DNA evidence conclusively linked him to all the rape cases, leaving no doubt of his guilt.
The sentencing was comprehensive and reflective of the severity of Appie’s actions. He received a double life imprisonment for the rape charges. Additionally, he was given various prison terms for attempted murder and robbery, ensuring that he would face justice for all of his crimes. The court also declared him unfit to possess a firearm and ordered his name to be entered into the National Register for Sexual Offenders, preventing him from having any contact with children in the future.
The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, commended Sergeant Sidwell Dastile for his diligent investigation that led to the successful conviction of Appie. The meticulousness of the investigation proved crucial in ensuring a strong case against the accused, resulting in the life sentences imposed by the court.
