Hammanskraal Water Project Enters Second Phase as Klipdrift Plant Handover Brings Hope for Safe Drinking Water

Hammanskraal Water Project

The Hammanskraal Water Project, aimed at restoring clean and safe drinking water to communities in the City of Tshwane, has officially entered its second phase following the handover of the newly upgraded Klipdrift Water Treatment Works on Sunday.

Water and Sanitation Minister Pemmy Majodina led the ceremony, marking another milestone in the R4 billion initiative to end decades of water insecurity in the region. The upgraded facility is expected to supply potable water to areas including Majakaneng, Kudub, and Jubilee, communities that have long endured unreliable and unsafe water supply.

Clean Water Returns to Hammanskraal After 20 Years

For many residents, the launch of the second phase is a symbol of long-awaited change. Earlier this year, parts of Hammanskraal received clean, drinkable water from taps for the first time in over 20 years, following the launch of the Magalies Klipdrift Water Treatment Plant. Now, with the Klipdrift facility entering full operational status, thousands more are expected to benefit.

City of Tshwane Mayor Nasiphi Moya confirmed during the handover that the new system is currently undergoing a flushing process, which will be completed in the next three weeks. “By July, we expect the water to be completely safe for consumption, and we are committed to keeping the community informed throughout the process,” said Moya.

Minister Calls for Municipal Care and Maintenance

Minister Majodina emphasised that while infrastructure delivery is essential, ongoing maintenance must remain a top priority. “This is one of the critical projects where we are trying to intervene and work together with Tshwane to ensure there is reliability of water. Your growing population needs water,” she said.

The Minister called on municipal leadership to maintain the infrastructure with diligence, specifically referencing the newly installed 33.7km pipeline, which connects to multiple communities. “We want to make a plea to the municipality to ensure that this 33.7km pipeline is taken care of. The last phase will be a 150km pipe, but please do maintenance on this,” she urged.

Phase Two and Beyond: Ensuring Long-Term Water Security

The second phase of the Hammanskraal Water Project focuses on scaling up water delivery, treatment capacity, and pipeline expansion. The upgraded Klipdrift plant will improve water pressure, reduce contamination risk, and enable the municipality to serve communities more efficiently. The final leg of the project will see the development of a 150km pipeline, significantly increasing the reach of safe, treated water.

According to project engineers and the Department of Water and Sanitation, the entire system has been built with climate-resilient infrastructure, incorporating modern filtration, chlorination, and automated monitoring systems to ensure real-time oversight and prevent another water crisis like the one Hammanskraal faced in recent years.

Community Hope and National Impact

The handover comes as part of the government’s broader effort to strengthen water infrastructure across the country. In 2023, the Department of Water and Sanitation declared Hammanskraal a priority intervention zone after a deadly cholera outbreak revealed systemic failures in water treatment and distribution. Since then, national and local government have collaborated to fast-track upgrades and ensure compliance with South African National Standards (SANS) 241 for potable water.

Local residents, who have for years relied on water tankers and bottled water, expressed cautious optimism about the latest progress. “We are hopeful that this time, we will have clean water every day, not just promises,” said community member Thandi Mahlangu.
