Hammanskraal Water Crisis

The City of Tshwane has announced that tap water in Hammanskraal is now safe to drink after successful repairs at the Klipdrift Water Treatment Plant. The plant experienced a power failure due to a severe storm on 4 February 2025, leading to concerns about water quality in the region.

Background of the Water Crisis

Hammanskraal, located just north of Pretoria, has faced ongoing challenges with water quality for over a decade. The community has frequently dealt with contaminated tap water, leading to health concerns and reliance on alternative water sources. In June 2023, a cholera outbreak in the area resulted in more than 30 deaths and over 100 hospitalizations, underscoring the critical need for a reliable and safe water supply.

Impact of the Recent Power Failure

The severe storm on 4 February caused significant damage to the mini substation supplying electricity to the Klipdrift facility, resulting in a complete shutdown of the water treatment process. This interruption left reservoirs empty, affecting several areas, including Mandela Village, Marokolong, Ramotse, Kekana Gardens, Kudube Unit 9, Babelegi Industrial, and Bridgeview informal settlement.

Restoration Efforts and Water Quality Assurance

Repairs commenced immediately, and the plant was restarted on 8 February. The City of Tshwane, in collaboration with Magalies Water, conducted extensive testing and flushing of the pipelines to eliminate air pockets and ensure the restoration of water quality. Continuous monitoring protocols have been implemented to maintain water quality standards. Residents are encouraged to rely on official communications from the City to avoid misinformation.

Community Response and Ongoing Challenges

Despite the restoration of water services, some community members remain skeptical about the safety of the tap water. The prolonged history of water quality issues has led to a trust deficit between residents and municipal authorities. Efforts are ongoing to rebuild this trust through transparent communication and consistent water quality assurance.

Future Initiatives for Sustainable Water Supply

The City of Tshwane is committed to ensuring the long-term safety and reliability of the water supply in Hammanskraal. Ongoing infrastructure improvements, including the upgrade of the Rooiwal Wastewater Treatment Plant, are part of the City’s strategy to prevent future disruptions and maintain public confidence in the municipal water system. These efforts aim to provide a sustainable solution to the area’s longstanding water issues.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and report any water-related issues promptly to local authorities. The City will continue to provide updates as necessary to keep the community informed about the status of their water supply.
