Israel Defense Forces (IDF)
By Nkosana Khumalo
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have announced that Hamas has not fulfilled its obligations under the recently brokered ceasefire agreement. Lieutenant Colonel Nadav Shoshani, the IDF International Spokesperson, stated, “As of this morning, Hamas has not fulfilled its obligation, and contrary to the agreement, has not provided the State of Israel with the names of the returning female hostages up to this time. The ceasefire will not come into effect as long as Hamas does not fulfill its obligations.”
The ceasefire, facilitated by mediators from the United States, Qatar, and Egypt, was intended to halt the 15-month-long conflict between Israel and Hamas. A key component of the agreement involved Hamas providing a list of hostages slated for release. However, the deadline passed without Hamas delivering the required information, leading to a postponement of the ceasefire’s implementationb.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized that the ceasefire would not commence without the receipt of the hostage list, stating, “Without the list of hostages, the ceasefire will not proceed.” In response to Hamas’s non-compliance, the IDF continued its military operations in the Gaza Strip, including artillery and drone strikes.
Despite the setback, mediators remain hopeful that the ceasefire can be salvaged. Hamas has attributed the delay to “technical reasons” and has expressed a commitment to the agreement. Negotiations are ongoing to resolve the impasse and implement the ceasefire as planned.
In a related development, the IDF and the Israel Security Agency (ISA) conducted a covert operation in the Gaza Strip, successfully recovering the body of Staff Sergeant Oron Shaul. Shaul was killed in action during Operation Protective Edge in 2014, and his body had been held by Hamas since then. The IDF and ISA extended their condolences to the Shaul family and reaffirmed their commitment to bringing home all hostages as soon as possible.
