Groenewald Moves 28s Leader to Maximum-Security Prison
By Thabo Mosia
Cape Town – Correctional Services Minister Pieter Groenewald has taken decisive action by intervening in the transfer of George “Geweld” Thomas, the notorious leader of the 28s prison gang, to the Helderstroom Prison in the Western Cape. This decision comes after significant outcry from community leaders concerned about the high risk Thomas’ presence poses to local communities.
A Notorious Criminal’s Record
Thomas, currently serving a sentence of at least 175 years imprisonment, was convicted in 2015 on over 50 charges, including:
• Seven counts of murder
• Three counts of attempted murder
• Eleven counts of illegally possessing firearms
• Ten counts of illegally possessing ammunition
• Two counts of racketeering
• Three counts of belonging to a criminal gang
• Three counts of conspiracy to commit a crime
• Ten counts of inciting the commitment of a crime
• One count of housebreaking with intent to commit robbery
• Three counts of theft
Swift Action Taken
In response to community concerns, Groenewald has ensured Thomas was “swiftly redirected” to an alternative maximum-security facility. The department released a statement confirming this move and added that an urgent investigation is underway to determine the reasons behind Thomas’ irregular transfer to Helderstroom.
Emphasising Community Engagement
“We will work with communities on an ongoing basis to improve the system and maximise the positive change it can bring to vulnerable communities,” said Minister Groenewald. On Tuesday, he met with representatives from the Cape Crime Crisis Coalition to discuss concerns and explore possible interventions to minimise the presence of bad actors in communities plagued by gang-related violence.
Ongoing Investigations
The Department of Correctional Services is conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Thomas’ transfer. The aim is to ensure that such irregularities do not occur in the future and to uphold the safety and security of South African communities.
