# Relaunch of South African Airways in Cape Town
The South African government is set to officially relaunch South African Airways (SAA) in Cape Town on Thursday, marking two years since the airline returned to the skies. The event will also be used to announce the restart of SAA’s direct flights to São Paulo, Brazil.
Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan described the relaunch as a milestone for the airline, which had faced turbulence after being grounded for 16 months and undergoing business rescue to avoid liquidation.
Gordhan said, “The upcoming event marks a very significant step in the resurgence of South African Airways. We look forward to the official relaunch of SAA, along with the introduction of its first intercontinental flight to São Paulo, Brazil.”
Earlier this year, SAA revealed plans to operate four weekly flights to São Paulo, with two departing from Cape Town and two from Johannesburg. The decision was made after a thorough sustainability analysis.
SAA Interim CEO, Professor John Lamola, expressed excitement about the relaunch, stating, “We are overjoyed to announce São Paulo as our first international destination since the airline successfully emerged from an intensive Business Rescue process and COVID-19 lockdown. It also marks our return of our long-haul service out of Cape Town.”
Lamola highlighted the meticulous analysis and focus on sustainability that guided the decision to relaunch with São Paulo as the first destination. He added, “The teams at SAA are working hard behind the scenes to gear our operations for this much-anticipated route launch to South America.”
The first flight to São Paulo is scheduled to depart from Cape Town next Tuesday, with the Johannesburg flight following suit on November 6th.
The relaunch of SAA and the resumption of direct flights to São Paulo symbolize a significant turning point for the airline. With careful planning and a commitment to sustainability, SAA is determined to regain its status as a leading African carrier.
