The 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign is an internationally recognized initiative endorsed by the United Nations.
Taking place annually from 25 November to 10 December, it aims to raise public awareness about gender-based violence (GBV) in line with a United Nations resolution passed in 1999.
This year, South Africa is commemorating the 25th anniversary of initiating the 16 Days of Activism campaign. The focus of this campaign is to shed light on the devastating impact that gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) have on women, children, and the social fabric of society.
As part of the campaign, the National Strategic Plan on GBVF will be implemented, with the goal of accelerating actions to end GBVF and ensuring that no one is left behind. This plan emphasizes a comprehensive and multi-faceted approach to addressing GBVF in South Africa.
To launch the campaign, the government will hold an event on 25 November, 2023 at the Nsikazi Stadium in Mbombela Local Municipality, Mpumalanga Province. The event will serve as a platform to raise awareness and engage the public in discussions about GBVF prevention and intervention strategies.
This year’s campaign will focus on the theme of “Accelerating actions to end gender-based violence and femicide: leaving no one behind.” The sub-theme, “Safe access for women to clean water: a basic human right,” aims to address the barriers that women face in accessing clean water and sanitation in South Africa.
