Government Calls for End to Stigmatization of People with Albinism

Albinism Awareness Month

In observance of National Albinism Awareness Month, the South African government has urged an end to the stigmatization and discrimination faced by individuals with albinism. This dedicated month allows for the celebration of the pride, challenges, and search for solutions among people with albinism.

The Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities released a statement on Monday, highlighting the need to recognize that not all individuals are treated equally. People with albinism often suffer human rights abuses and violations, silently and invisibly.

The department acknowledges that those with albinism face ongoing struggles to achieve a life of dignity and equality, as they confront misunderstandings about their condition both socially and medically.

Albinism is a rare genetic condition that affects the production of melanin pigment in the skin, hair, and eyes, and it occurs in all racial and ethnic groups worldwide.

During this awareness month, the department emphasizes the importance of providing information on albinism to create awareness. To further engage with individuals with albinism, the department, in partnership with the National Albinism Task Force, will organize an Albinism Community Outreach program and a webinar focused on the challenges faced by young people and individuals with albinism in the country.

Under the theme “Inclusion is Strength,” this year’s National Albinism Awareness Month aims to ensure that the voices of people with albinism are included in all aspects of life. The theme emphasizes the significance of including diverse groups from both within and outside the albinism community.

The department stresses that people must understand that albinism is a rare, non-contagious, genetically inherited condition that affects individuals worldwide, regardless of their ethnicity or gender. Individuals with albinism are entitled to the civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights recognized in the South African Bill of Rights and Constitution.

The department urges communities and workplaces, whether public or private, to organize activities throughout Albinism Awareness Month. These activities can include talks about albinism, fun days, picnics, charity walks, and fun runs.

South Africa has a White Paper on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which calls for collaboration between the government, civil society, and the private sector to ensure the social and economic inclusion of individuals with disabilities, including those with albinism.

The department emphasizes the relevance of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, both of which guarantee protection against discrimination. These are essential for upholding the rights of individuals with albinism, who often face visual impairments and require preventive measures to address their vulnerability to skin cancer.
