The Betway Premiership clash between Golden Arrows and Magesi FC, held at the Mpumalanga Stadium on September 25, 2024, was dramatically interrupted due to a power outage that halted the game in the 86th minute. Magesi FC was leading 1-0 when the incident occurred, with Wonderboy Makhubu scoring in the 79th minute, marking Magesi’s first goal in top-flight football. The teams will resume the remaining 4 minutes, plus injury time, today at 12:00 PM.
This situation came about due to a floodlight failure, which forced the match officials to abandon the game under Premier Soccer League (PSL) regulations. As per the PSL handbook, matches halted due to lighting issues must be resumed within 48 hours, with the teams playing out the remaining minutes under the same conditions. Both sides agreed to complete the fixture today, with Magesi holding a slender advantage.
Magesi’s Historic Moment Interrupted
For Magesi FC, the game was set to become a historic occasion, as the team, promoted from the Motsepe Foundation Championship, was on the verge of securing its first three points in the top division. Wonderboy Makhubu’s crucial strike put them ahead late in the game, offering hope to the underdog side. However, the floodlight failure put their celebrations on hold.
What to Expect in the Resumption
Golden Arrows will seek to claw back into the game with just minutes remaining. The resumption promises to be tense, with Arrows determined to find a late equaliser and deny Magesi their first Premiership victory. The game will resume under the same match conditions, and a narrow window remains for either team to alter the outcome.
This unprecedented situation has sparked discussions around stadium infrastructure and the reliability of floodlights at venues hosting top-tier football matches. The PSL will be monitoring the resumption closely, as such occurrences have both competitive and logistical consequences for teams and the league.
