PRETORIA – The stage is set for a historic day in South Africa as dignitaries from across the globe prepare to attend the inauguration ceremony of President-elect Cyril Ramaphosa on Wednesday. The event, shaping up to be a grand affair, will see the attendance of current and former Heads of State and Governments, reflecting the significance of this national milestone.

International Presence at the Ceremony

A statement released by the Presidency on Tuesday confirmed the high-profile guest list. “The ceremony will be witnessed by South African and international guests, including South African royalty, Members of Parliament, representatives of political parties, leaders of organised labour, business and civil society organisations, religious leaders and South Africans who have excelled in various capacities and endeavours.”

Among the prominent attendees will be representatives from regional, continental and international bodies such as the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the African Union (AU), and the United Nations (UN).

The Presidency has noted that at least 18 Heads of State and Government, three former Heads of State and Government, and nine Heads of Delegation are slated to attend, with additional confirmations still being received.

Countries to be represented at a high level include:

  • Kingdom of eSwatini and Kingdom of Lesotho
  • Republics of Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Namibia, Angola, and Tanzania
  • Republic of Uganda
  • People’s Republic of China
  • Arab Republic of Egypt
  • State of Palestine

Preparations and Public Guidance

President-elect Ramaphosa conducted a walkabout at the venue on Tuesday afternoon, assessing final preparations to ensure a seamless event.

The public is invited to attend the inauguration ceremony and can utilise the park and ride service available at the Tshwane Showgrounds. This arrangement allows attendees to park their vehicles and take a complimentary bus to the Union Buildings, where the event will take place.

The day’s programme will commence with a cultural spectacle on the South Lawns of the Union Buildings at 9 am, followed by formal proceedings kicking off at 11 am.
