On Monday, 5 May 2025, Glen College of Agriculture in Bloemfontein reopened its doors to students for the new academic term, marking a significant moment of renewal and commitment to excellence. The Acting Head of Department (HOD) for the Free State Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr. Tshepo Mabilo, extended a warm welcome to returning students, emphasizing the importance of academic operations and the value of student belongings. He highlighted the department’s dedication to creating a positive and supportive environment conducive to learning and personal growth.

Addressing Maintenance Challenges and Strengthening Leadership

Mr. Mabilo acknowledged past challenges related to the maintenance of student hostels and assured students that decisive actions have been taken to address these issues. “The main challenge of maintenance has been resolved by improving the maintenance of hostels,” he stated. In addition to infrastructure improvements, the department has taken steps to strengthen the college’s leadership.

He introduced Mr. C.P. Swarts as the newly appointed Acting Principal and Mr. L. Mariti as Vice Principal: Institute Support. Both bring a wealth of experience from the Department of Basic Education and have previously served as principals in agricultural schools. Their leadership is expected to restore order, enforce student discipline, and refocus the institution on academic excellence.

Inspiring a Culture of Learning and Innovation

In his address, Acting Principal Mr. Swarts shared his vision for the college, emphasizing the importance of developing and empowering students. He stated, “Our country needs talented, young people to build and inspire the agricultural industry to perform at its best in the fourth industrial revolution.” He expressed a commitment to creating a learning culture that enables students to reach their dreams.

Vice Principal Mr. Mariti also addressed the students, highlighting amendments to the code of conduct that will be enforced to ensure a disciplined and focused academic environment. Ms. Wongiwe Mngwambe, Vice Principal, emphasized the academic recovery plan for the upcoming term, outlining strategies to support students in achieving their academic goals.

A Legacy of Agricultural Excellence

Glen College of Agriculture, established in 1913, has a long-standing reputation for academic excellence in agriculture. The institution offers a range of agricultural education and training programs, catering to both higher education and further education needs. Specialized courses in Crop Production and Animal Production are supplemented by subjects in engineering, economics, pasture science, and extension.

The college’s historic farm campus spans nearly 4,600 hectares and features the picturesque Modder River to the south, with the Renosterspruit as a tributary. This setting provides students with practical, hands-on experience in a real-world agricultural environment.

Commitment to Student Support and Development

Glen College of Agriculture is dedicated to supporting its students through various initiatives. While the college itself does not have a bursary scheme, students have access to bursaries such as the National Skills Fund (NSF) and the AgriSETA bursary, available to registered students. The college also offers bodying and lodging facilities, recreational activities, and transport for monthly groceries, ensuring a comprehensive support system for students.

Applications for the upcoming academic year open at the beginning of June and close at the end of November. Prospective students are encouraged to apply early and take advantage of the diverse educational opportunities offered at Glen College of Agriculture.
