The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) has announced a major milestone in the refurbishment of the Giyani Water Treatment Works (WTW). The plant has reached “practical completion” and is now operating at full capacity, providing 28.5 megalitres of treated water daily.

Project Progress and Impact

According to a statement released by the DWS, the project has achieved 72.66% completion. The successful operation of the Giyani WTW marks a significant improvement in water supply for Giyani town and numerous villages within the Mopani District Municipality.

The WTW sources raw water from Nsami Dam, supplied through a 40.5km raw water pipeline from Nandoni Dam to Xikukwani Canal. This extensive pipeline network was finalised on 5 April 2023.

Comprehensive Efforts and Collaboration

“The renovation and enhancement of the Giyani WTW and its reticulation to 55 villages are administered by the Mopani District Municipality in its capacity as the Water Services Authority. Lepelle Northern Water is responsible for constructing the required bulk pipelines, while the DWS offers financial support and technical oversight,” noted the department.

Phased Implementation and Progress

Work is actively progressing to supply water to the first batch of 24 villages. The first phase of this reticulation project is at various stages of development, with nine villages already reaching practical completion. These villages include Ndindani, Ngove B, Mhlaba Willem, Bambeni, Homu 14A and 14B, Nwakhuwani, Risinga View A, and Mapayeni A. Residents now have water taps installed in their yards, receiving water through the newly completed bulk pipelines.

For the remaining 15 villages, construction is still ongoing. In the interim, these communities have access to water from various schemes, such as borehole sources, implemented by the Mopani District Municipality.

Future Plans and Expansion

Looking ahead, Phase 1 of the project is scheduled for completion by the end of August 2024. This phase involves installing bulk pipelines, connecting secondary pipelines to local reservoirs, refurbishing existing reservoirs, and setting up elevated steel tanks, alongside yard connections.

Phase 2 is set to begin during the 2024/25 municipal financial year. This phase will upgrade the Giyani WTW to increase its capacity by an additional 10 megalitres per day and extend reticulation to the remaining 31 villages. This stage is also expected to span 24 months.

Addressing Community Concerns

The DWS has acknowledged the delays experienced in the project and expressed empathy for the communities still facing intermittent water supply. The department reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the successful completion of this comprehensive Giyani water project.

Disagreement between the Matjhabeng Local Municipality and Sibanye-Stillwater mine has exposed lack of accountability after wastewater flows on to farmland in Welkom.
