In a significant setback for Ghanaian football, the Black Stars have failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco. This marks the first time in 20 years that Ghana will miss the continental tournament, ending a consistent presence that began in 2006.

The decisive blow came on November 15, 2024, when Ghana drew 1-1 against Angola in their penultimate Group F qualifying match. This result left the Black Stars with just three points from five matches, effectively eliminating their chances of securing a spot in the tournament.

The qualification campaign was marred by a series of disappointing performances. Ghana managed only three draws and suffered two losses, highlighting issues in both attack and defense. The team’s struggles were evident in their inability to convert opportunities and maintain defensive solidity throughout the qualifiers.

The failure to qualify has led to widespread criticism of head coach Otto Addo. Appointed after Ghana’s underwhelming performance at the 2022 World Cup, Addo’s tenure has been scrutinized for tactical decisions and player selections. His preference for a 3-4-3 formation has been particularly questioned, with many attributing the team’s defensive vulnerabilities to this strategy.

In the aftermath of the failed campaign, calls for resignations have intensified. Kojo Addae-Mensah, a member of the committee that appointed Addo, has publicly urged the coach to step down, stating, “For not qualifying for the AFCON, I think Otto Addo should resign. The least he could have done was to qualify us for the AFCON.”

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is also under pressure. Kudjoe Fianoo, chairman of the Ghana League Clubs Association, has called for GFA President Kurt Okraku to resign if the team fails to qualify, emphasizing that with AFCON’s expansion to 24 teams, qualification should have been more attainable.
