Ghaleb Cachalia Resigns from Democratic Alliance and South African Parliament over Discomfort of DA’s Reaction on Gaza Statements
Ghaleb Cachalia, a prominent member of the Democratic Alliance (DA) party and South African Parliament, has publicly announced his resignation from both roles due to disagreements over public statements, particularly his remarks related to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
Lately, Cachalia has followed the footsteps of fellow black leaders such as Khume Ramulifho, who also stepped down from the party and the Gauteng Legislature to join Rise Mzansi. Ramulifho, a stalwart of the Democratic Alliance for more than two decades, originally joined the party back in 1998 when it was still operating under the name of the Democratic Party.
DA leader, John Steenhuisen, had dismissed Cachalia as a member of his shadow cabinet following the contentious comments Cachalia made about the Gaza issue.
Cachalia, while explicating the reasons behind his resignation, stated that the DA’s leadership had grown uneasy with his recent public discourse, especially those concerning the war on Gaza. He shared his dissatisfaction with the evolving trends within the party, voicing concerns of growing dysfunction, departure from democratic norms, and embarking on a more authoritarian course.
“I am particularly apprehensive about the perceptible shift by the party to the right – away from the core liberal values and principles,” said Cachalia. “In its current form and under existing leadership, I find myself incapable of serving the fundamental goals of promoting human rights, economic prosperity, and a more inclusive democracy within the confines of the DA.”
Despite the resignation, Cachalia reaffirmed his commitment to the values and principles of the party he joined eight years ago — to counterbalance the failures of ANC governance that has reportedly led South Africa to an unfavorable state.
About Ghaleb Cachalia:
Cachalia is a respected South African businessman and has formerly served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Democratic Alliance (DA). He is known for his lineage as the son of renowned anti-Apartheid activists Amina and Yusuf Cachalia, and he is also a relative of Ismail Mahomed Cachalia, a former MP of the African National Congress (ANC).
