“Arthur knows the culture of Kaizer Chiefs…he knows how to play. As a player he knew how to win trophies as well. So, I think for me it is the best decision that Chiefs has done for now,” said Schalwyk.

This comes after the Amakhosi announced that after a series of meetings, the club and coach Stuart Baxter have come to a mutual agreement of an early termination of his contract with immediate effect on Thursday.

“In his second spell with Kaizer Chiefs, Baxter has led the team in 23 matches (excluding 3 league matches in December 2021). He managed to win 9 matches, draw 6 and lost 8 of the games. The team managed to score 25 goals and concede 23 during that time.”

Schalkwyk says Zwane is the right choice. He continued to describe Zwane as a disciplined and inspirational former player.

“I think it was about time, because Chiefs wasn’t doing good. Maybe now when a new coach comes…he’ll come with good ideas and winning trophies, it’s been long now. Because I remember when I was playing, we made sure that every season we win one or two trophies,” said Schalkwyk.

Schalkwyk is currently working as an assistant coach for Hungry Lions FC which is a team playing at Glad Africa – First Division. Hungry Lions are currently at position 11.

He has recently hosted a Gert Schalkwyk Easter Tournament which was taking place at Alabama stadium in the Matlosana Local Municipality.

Chiefs under the leadership of Zwane experienced their first defeat as they were narrowly defeated 1-0 at the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch on Saturday by hosts Stellenbosch FC.

In the 20th minute Dino van Rooyen scored the winning and only goal of the game.

The club said they can feel aggrieved not to have returned from the Western Cape with three points. Amakhosi confirmed that they will now turn their focus and attention to their next DStv Premiership assignment against Golden Arrows on the 27th April.
