George Building Collapse Toll Rises: Community and Officials Band Together in Rescue Efforts

George Building Collapse

The number of people pulled from the debris of the collapsed five-storey building on Victoria Street in George has climbed to 36 as of Wednesday. This increase in survivors leaves 39 individuals still missing amidst the rubble, with the death toll currently standing at seven.

The collapse, which occurred around 2pm on Monday, 6 May 2024, sent shockwaves through the heart of George, a town now bound together in grief and resilience. At the time of the catastrophic event, it is believed that 75 construction workers were present at the site, each now accounted for in either the tally of survivors, the missing, or the deceased.

In the wake of the disaster, Western Cape Premier Alan Winde praised the overwhelming response from more than 200 emergency services personnel, community volunteers, and non-government organisations (NGOs) who have banded together in a concerted rescue effort. “From the first responders working tirelessly since Monday afternoon to the outpouring of support from residents, your collective efforts underscore the strength and spirit of our province,” Winde expressed, visibly moved during a tour of the devastation.

As the community holds its breath for the rescue of the remaining 39 individuals, the Premier recounted moments of silence at the site, a haunting pause filled with hope for signs of life under the concrete slabs. “The unity and determination we’ve witnessed are a testament to the indomitable spirit of George’s residents and the broader Western Cape community,” he said, extending his gratitude to all involved.

The commendation extended to a myriad of local organisations and residents, including LoveGeorge, Gift of the Givers, SARZA, and the Lions of George, among others, whose contributions have been both crucial and heartwarming. “This collective endeavour illustrates the power of community in the face of adversity. To the emergency personnel on the frontline: you are true heroes,” Winde stated, echoing the sentiment of a community rallying together.

The tragedy has also elicited a message of condolence from President Cyril Ramaphosa, who extended his heartfelt thoughts to the families of the deceased and those anxiously awaiting news of the missing. “The President’s thoughts are with you. We commend the bravery of the rescue teams and emphasise the importance of thorough investigations to bring closure and prevent such incidents in the future,” his statement read.

As George and its residents navigate these challenging times, the Premier reassured families of the deceased and those still awaiting news that no stone will be left unturned in the quest to uncover the incident’s cause. “With every piece of debris cleared, we hold hope for more survivors and answers,” he affirmed.
