George Building Collapse

George, South Africa – The death toll from the George building collapse has now reached 32, confirms the George Municipality. The tragic incident, which occurred on 6 May, has seen rescue and recovery operations extend into their second week, with 20 individuals still missing.

As of 9 am Tuesday, officials reported that out of the 81 workers believed to have been on-site during the collapse, 61 have either been rescued or their bodies recovered. The municipality remains committed to the rescue operations while simultaneously expediting the process of identifying the deceased, as part of their efforts to bring solace to grieving families. The Forensic Pathology Service (FPS) alongside the South African Police Service (SAPS) are employing fingerprints, DNA testing, and examination of unique features such as tattoos and personal attire to identify the victims.

In a gesture of support to the victims’ families, the Public Works Minister is scheduled to visit the disaster site. Adding a layer of solace, the municipality guarantees the presence of fluent Chewa, Portuguese, and Shona language practitioners to cater to the emotional and psychological needs of those affected by this tragedy.

The identification process, however, faces hurdles due to inaccuracies in the naming of missing persons. Families who have lost contact with their loved ones are urged to report to the George Civic Centre on York Street, assisting in the gathering of accurate information for the Department of Social Development.

In the wake of the catastrophe, Tertuis Simmers, the Western Cape MEC for Infrastructure, commended the relentless efforts of the rescue teams and support staff. Simmers disclosed that an independent investigation spearheaded by the Western Cape Government (WCG) is underway. The inquiry aims to dissect the incident thoroughly to prevent future occurrences on construction sites across the province. Precise techniques including ground penetration radar (GPR) are being utilized, along with the collection of material samples for independent laboratory analysis.

The WCG, in its commitment to aiding the investigation, has provided machinery and personnel resources, vowing to persist in its support until every worker is accounted for and the cause of the collapse is determined. Cooperation extends with SAPS, the Department of Employment and Labour, and the National Department of Public Works and Infrastructure in the investigative efforts.
