Omotoso set to appear in court on Monday
By Nkosana Khumalo
Controversial Nigerian televangelist Timothy Omotoso has been rearrested in East London, Eastern Cape, just days after being acquitted on all charges of rape, human trafficking, and sexual assault.
The arrest, confirmed by National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola, was executed by the Department of Home Affairs Immigration Inspectorate in collaboration with the South African Police Service’s National Intervention Unit (NIU) and Tactical Response Team (TRT). Omotoso is now facing charges related to violations of the Immigration Act and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, 12 May 2025.
Early Morning Arrest in East London
The arrest occurred at approximately 5:00 AM, shortly after Omotoso concluded a church service. General Masemola provided a brief statement confirming the operation:
“This morning at East London, around 5:00, members of the Department of Home Affairs Immigration Inspectorate, together with the South African Police’s NIU and TRT, arrested [Timothy Omotoso] in the town just after the church. He will be facing charges related to violation of the Immigration Act, and he will appear in court on Monday.”
This development follows closely on the heels of Omotoso’s recent acquittal, which had already stirred public debate and media attention.
Background: Previous Legal Challenges
Timothy Omotoso, founder of the Jesus Dominion International Church, has been a polarizing figure in South Africa. His previous trial, which began in 2017, involved multiple charges, including rape, human trafficking, and sexual assault. The case garnered significant media coverage and public interest, highlighting issues of abuse within religious institutions.
Despite the gravity of the allegations, Omotoso was acquitted of all charges in early May 2025, a verdict that elicited mixed reactions from the public and advocacy groups.
Immigration Act Violations
While specific details regarding the new charges have not been disclosed, violations of the Immigration Act can encompass a range of offenses, including overstaying a visa, fraudulent documentation, or unauthorized work. The Department of Home Affairs has yet to release a detailed statement outlining the exact nature of Omotoso’s alleged infractions.
