Gautrain has suspended its train services between Park Station and Rosebank Station due to water and soil seeping into the tunnel, caused by illegal drilling on private property above the tunnel. To assist passengers, Gautrain has implemented an emergency bus service between the affected stations.

Service Disruption Details

On Saturday morning, 15 February 2025, Gautrain announced the suspension of its train services between Park and Rosebank stations. The disruption was attributed to water and soil ingress into the tunnel, resulting from unauthorized drilling activities on private property situated above the tunnel. This illegal drilling did not comply with the Gauteng Transport Infrastructure Act (GTIA) requirements, leading to operational challenges within the tunnel system.

Immediate Response and Passenger Assistance

In response to the disruption, Gautrain promptly introduced an emergency bus service to ferry passengers between Park and Rosebank stations. Gautrain spokesperson, Albi Modise, stated that the bus service would be scaled up to accommodate the increased passenger load and minimize inconvenience. He also assured commuters that investigations are underway to identify the property owners responsible for the illegal drilling and to implement remedial measures to restore full train services.

Safety Measures and Infrastructure Integrity

The safety and security of passengers remain a top priority for Gautrain. The rail system is equipped with advanced safety features, including emergency access shafts and refuge shelters within the tunnel network. These structures are designed to provide safe evacuation routes and facilitate emergency responses. Regular maintenance and stringent safety protocols are in place to ensure the infrastructure’s integrity and passenger well-being.

The unauthorized drilling activity has raised significant legal concerns. Non-compliance with the Gauteng Transport Infrastructure Act not only endangers public safety but also compromises critical infrastructure. Gautrain is collaborating with relevant authorities to pursue legal action against those responsible and to prevent future incidents that could jeopardize the rail system’s operations and safety
