Pamela Ncumisa Selani
Forty-seven-year-old Pamela Ncumisa Selani has been handed three life sentences by the Pretoria High Court. The court found Selani guilty of murdering her two lovers, Michael Changisa and Gift (surname not disclosed), and her son Avile Jonjwana between 2016 and 2017 in Olivenhoutbosch.
The Crimes Unveiled
The horrific events unfolded in a sequence that left the community reeling. In 2016, Selani discovered that her partner, Michael Changisa, had infected her with HIV. Consumed by anger, she conspired with her second lover, Gift, to kill Changisa. Gift executed the gruesome murder by beating Changisa with a hammer while Selani’s young children were present. Together, they buried the body in Selani’s backyard.
A year later, Selani and her 17-year-old son, Avile, plotted to end Gift’s life as well. Gift had become abusive, compelling Selani and Avile to poison him and then drown him. They buried Gift’s body in a shallow grave above Changisa’s remains.
The family’s tragic story took another dark turn when Avile, battling drug addiction, threatened to expose the crimes. In a bid to silence him, Selani killed her son Avile, who had tried to extort her by threatening to go to the police.
A Quiet Witness
It was Selani’s 14-year-old son who ultimately broke the cycle of violence. Three years after the murders, the young boy confided in a traditional healer who then reported the harrowing details to a local community leader. The community leader promptly alerted the authorities, leading to Selani’s arrest and subsequent trial.
The Court’s Judgment
Judge Papi Masopa showed no leniency towards Selani, delivering three life sentences for her heinous crimes. In his judgment, he highlighted Selani’s lack of remorse, quoting her persistent claims of innocence even after her conviction.
“Selani is an evil woman who killed her two lovers and her child. It is by mercy that the 14-year-old was not killed,” said Judge Masopa.
Judge Masopa found no compelling circumstances to deviate from the prescribed minimum sentences and hoped that the severe punishment would serve as a deterrent to others contemplating similar offences.
Community and Judicial Response
Lumka Mahanjana, the spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in Gauteng, praised the court’s decision. “She was given an additional 5 years imprisonment for defeating the administration of justice,” Mahanjana stated.
State Prosecutor, Advocate Eric Sihlangu, argued that the severity of Selani’s crimes warranted the harsh sentences. “Selani showed no remorse for her actions,” he said. “These serious offences are prevalent in the country, and it’s crucial to send a message to the community to deter similar crimes.”
Mahanjana added, “The NPA welcomes the sentence and wants to underscore the importance of human life. We will be vigorous in our pursuit of these cases to serve as a deterrent to would-be murderers.”
