Gauteng Unveils Smart Licensing Centre in Atteridgeville, Bringing Services to the People

Smart Licensing Centre in Atteridgeville

Pretoria West, Gauteng – The Gauteng provincial government has officially launched a state-of-the-art smart licensing centre in Atteridgeville. The move is set to revolutionize the way licensing services are provided to residents in townships, informal settlements, and hostels, particularly in the Pretoria West area.

MEC for Transport and Logistics, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, unveiled the new smart licensing centre on Wednesday, underscoring its potential to transform the lives of many and cater to the growing service demands of the province. “Overall, this initiative has the potential to bring convenience, efficiency, sustainability, and integrity to townships, informal settlements and hostel communities, ultimately transforming lives and contributing to the province’s renewal service demands,” Diale-Tlabela said during the opening ceremony.

The smart licensing centre will expand access to vital government services, such as the renewal of driver’s licenses, and is integrated into the broader administrative system of the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC). “Integrating these smart testing centres into the administration system of the RTMC and offering services like other testing centres across South Africa highlights a commitment to improving public service delivery and increasing capacity to meet the demands of license renewals and related services,” the MEC explained.

Diale-Tlabela noted that driving license renewal had been plagued by corruption, with intermediaries, commonly known as ‘runners’, artificially inflating costs by demanding payments for booking slots. With the introduction of the new smart DLTCs, such practices are expected to come to an end. “These operations have ceased to be the order of the day at these smart driving licence testing centres (DLTCs). Here, you come as per appointment, and a law enforcer becomes the centre manager. This approach will assist in mitigating serious issues of corruption, making the process fairer and more transparent,” she emphasized.

In addition to streamlining services, the centre is noteworthy for being fully online and cashless, aligning with the Gauteng government’s ambition to leverage new technologies and optimize processes. Adding to its modernity, the centre is powered by solar energy, ensuring uninterrupted service delivery even amidst frequent power outages.

MEC Diale-Tlabela hailed the new centre as a “game-changer in Growing Gauteng Together through the Smart Mobility Plan.” She added, “The centre is also solar-powered; ensuring that even during load shedding, services will continue to be provided. This commitment to sustainability further underscores the forward-thinking approach of the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport (GDRT) in meeting the needs of its communities.”

The efficiency of the service is anticipated to be second to none, with the licence renewal process taking an estimated mere 10 minutes, indicating that a higher volume of residents can be serviced expeditiously.

Indicative of its strategic importance, the MEC acknowledged the Gautrain Management Agency’s (GMA) involvement in piloting and rolling out the smart DLTCs. She cited the positive customer feedback from the Centurion station DLTC and others as indicative of the project’s potential for widespread success.
