Gauteng traffic police are urging motorists to obey road rules following a tragic Easter weekend that claimed at least 15 lives on the province’s roads. The spike in fatal crashes, primarily involving pedestrians, has prompted authorities to call for greater road safety awareness to prevent further loss of life.

The Easter weekend, a busy travel period in South Africa, saw a devastating number of road accidents across Gauteng, with pedestrians bearing the brunt of the casualties. Traffic police spokesperson Obed Sibasa highlighted dangerous driving as a persistent issue, stating, “We urge road users to take charge of their safety and the safety of other road users. Drinking and driving, driving at excessive speed for the circumstances, reckless and negligent driving are the three offences for which a driver is immediately arrested. Remember, in Gauteng, there is no money, there is no price, there is nothing.” His stern warning underscores the province’s zero-tolerance approach to reckless behaviour on the roads.

The 15 fatalities add to South Africa’s alarming road death toll, with Gauteng’s busy highways, including the N1, N3, and R21, often seeing high accident rates during holiday periods. Many of the crashes were attributed to preventable factors such as speeding, driving under the influence, and failure to obey traffic signals. Pedestrians, often vulnerable on poorly lit roads or near informal settlements, accounted for the majority of the victims, highlighting the need for improved infrastructure like pedestrian crossings and street lighting.

Gauteng’s traffic police have intensified enforcement efforts, deploying additional officers to conduct roadblocks, breathalyser tests, and speed checks over the Easter period. These operations aim to curb the “big three” offences—drinking and driving, excessive speeding, and reckless driving—which Sibasa noted lead to immediate arrests without the option of a fine. The province has also rolled out awareness campaigns urging drivers to plan their journeys, avoid distractions, and respect speed limits, particularly in residential areas where pedestrians are at risk.

Beyond driver behaviour, road safety experts point to systemic challenges contributing to the high crash rate. Overloaded vehicles, unroadworthy taxis, and inadequate road signage in some areas exacerbate risks. The Easter weekend’s heavy traffic, combined with long-distance travel and late-night driving, creates a perfect storm for accidents. In response, the Gauteng Department of Community Safety has called for collaboration between law enforcement, local municipalities, and communities to address these issues holistically.

Nationwide, South Africa recorded over 700 road fatalities during the 2024 festive season, and early 2025 data suggests holiday periods remain deadly. Gauteng, as the country’s economic hub, faces unique challenges with its high volume of vehicles and diverse road users, from commuters to long-haul truck drivers. The recent crashes have renewed calls for stricter penalties, better driver education, and investment in road infrastructure to protect vulnerable groups like pedestrians and cyclists.

Authorities are urging the public to report reckless driving and to use designated hotlines for road safety concerns. Community leaders have also encouraged residents to advocate for safer roads in their neighbourhoods, particularly in areas prone to pedestrian accidents. As investigations into the Easter weekend crashes continue, traffic police hope heightened vigilance will reduce fatalities in future holiday periods.
