ANC Gauteng Chairperson Panyaza Lesufi Announces Bold Plans to Combat Crime with MK Veterans
Johannesburg, Gauteng – Panyaza Lesufi, the ANC Provincial Chairperson, has announced a plan to employ 3,000 Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) veterans to bolster the fight against crime in Gauteng. Lesufi made the declaration in front of a gathered assembly of ANC Greater Johannesburg volunteers at the Orlando West Communal hall on Saturday, as they convened to gear up for the 2024 elections.
In his speech, Lesufi urged former MK combatants to join forces with the government. “All combatants of MK, don’t go that side; come this side. On the 5th of February, we want to take you to train you to come fight crime in Gauteng,” he stated.
The announcement comes amid the formation of a new political party by former President Jacob Zuma, dubbed the uMkhonto Wesizwe Party, which has been actively targeting provinces such as Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and Mpumalanga for the upcoming elections. The party, claiming ambitions for a two-thirds election majority, has triggered a response from the ANC.
ANC provincial secretary in KwaZulu-Natal, Bheki Mtolo, cautioned the public against being deceived by any assertions that Zuma’s party represents the historical MK militia wing of the ANC established during the struggle against apartheid in 1961. Mtolo clarified that the new party, albeit bearing the same name, is distinct and open to new recruits without the same pedigree.
During the assembly, Lesufi outlined four pivotal campaign promises that the ANC in Gauteng will act upon. Beyond the recruitment of MK veterans, the provincial government has pledged to reappoint 35,000 workers, including teachers and nurses with lapsed contracts, starting February 1. They will be reinstated and appointed while on duty, ensuring no disruption to essential public services.
The commitment to infrastructure and education was also emphasized: the installation of over 2,000 new transformers is set to secure electricity for every home, and a bold bursary initiative promises uncapped educational funding for the top three students in each Gauteng school until their tertiary studies are completed.
