The “Green Army,” a flagship initiative under the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) aimed at waste management and food security in Gauteng, has officially concluded its contractual period. This programme, spearheaded by Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, was launched in May last year and has since employed over 6,000 people.

A Successful Year of Environmental Stewardship

The “Green Army” diligently served the Gauteng community by conducting clean-ups, collecting both recyclable and non-recyclable waste from households, and supporting waste pickers and recycling buy-back centres. Premier Lesufi shared his thoughts on the initiative: “They will also provide environmental support through greening initiatives.” These efforts not only contributed to a cleaner environment but also supported local recycling economies.

Message to EPWP Participants

In an official letter, Khululekile Mase, the Acting Head of the Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Environment, addressed the participants of the EPWP. He stated:

“This communique serves to remind you regarding the contractual agreement that came to an end on 31 May 2024. Furthermore, you are informed that you will receive payment for the days worked during the month of June 2024. Please note that there will be a delay regarding the payment of stipends for the month of June, due to the administrative and systemic processes, that have to be followed after the contractual agreement came to an end on 31 May 2024. We apologise for any inconvenience this might cause. Kind regards.”
