Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi is set to announce the Members of the Executive Council (MECs) for the 7th administration tonight, 1 July 2024, at 7 pm. This comes at a crucial time marked by significant political shifts in the province and across South Africa.
“From 53% to 36%: ANC Loses Confidence of Gauteng Voters”
In the recent May elections, the African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng experienced a substantial decline in voter support, securing only 36.49% of the votes (1,399,136 votes), down from 53.20% (2,413,979 votes) in the 2019 elections. The Democratic Alliance (DA) maintained its position as the primary opposition with 26.78% of the vote.
On a national scale, the ANC’s performance was its worst since the apartheid era ended 30 years ago, capturing only 40% of the vote in the May 29 general elections. This significant drop led to the ANC losing its majority in Parliament, raising questions about the party’s future and strategic direction.
“Gauteng Awaits New Executive Council Amidst Negotiations”
Since his re-election on 14 June 2024 supported by the Provincial Government of Unity backed by the Democratic Alliance, IFP, PA, FF Plus, and Rise Mzansi , Lesufi has delayed the announcement of his executive, initially expected on 23 June. This delay has fueled speculation and controversy, particularly on social media platform X, where Lesufi has been actively disputing reports and addressing concerns.
Lesufi has denied claims that President Cyril Ramaphosa instructed him to include DA members in his Cabinet. Instead, he attributed the delay to the complexity and difficulty of the ongoing negotiations, highlighting that these are not typical negotiations.
“Coalitions: The New Norm?”
Following its inability to secure a clear majority in Gauteng, the ANC has been engaging with other parties to form a coalition government. This intricate process aims to ensure a stable and effective administration for the province over the next five years.
Sizwe Pamla, Spokesperson for the Gauteng Premier, confirmed the significance of the forthcoming executive council: “This new Executive Council will lead the Gauteng Provincial Government over the next five years, ensuring the implementation of Gauteng’s Programme of Action and interventions to grow the economy of Gauteng and improve the quality of life for the residents of the province.”
“National Perspective: Ramaphosa’s Inclusive Government”
President Cyril Ramaphosa recently announced the members of the National Executive for South Africa’s seventh administration on 30 June 2024. The updated executive is inclusive, featuring representatives from all eleven parties forming the Government of National Unity (GNU).
Speaking from the Union Buildings in Pretoria, Ramaphosa emphasized the need for inclusivity amidst South Africa’s challenges, stating, “Due to the need to ensure that the National Executive is inclusive of all the parties to the Government of National Unity, we couldn’t reduce the number of portfolios as planned.”
“Key Changes in Government Portfolios”
To address the nation’s pressing needs, Ramaphosa announced several significant structural changes:
- Merging the Ministries of Electricity and Energy.
- Creating a separate Ministry of Mineral and Petroleum Resources.
- Separating the Ministry of Agriculture from the Ministry of Land Reform and Rural Development.
